Why do substance abuse treatment programs include the usage of drugs?
Why do people who are undergoing rehabilitation have to use the likes of methadone? I’ve always thought that it was just abstaining from the illegal drug, as well as counseling and therapy, that is needed for addiction treatment.
Medication is very important for someone who wants to abstain from using drugs. When a person does illegal drugs, the drug makes changes within the body and the brain. Medication such as methadone helps in restoring the body and brain back to its healthy, natural state. It also represses withdrawal symptoms and relieves the patient of the craving for the illegal drug. This way, it makes recovery easier for the patient and lessens the chances of having a relapse.
lol well cocaine harroin and other stronger drugs after using them for a while your body becomes dependent on them for energy and no longer takes energy from food without drugs the body begins to shake due to loss of heat because theres no energy for the body to burn methodone is just a substitute for other drugs and is easier to break addiction
The other drugs are used to help with the withdrawal symptoms. Sometimes, esp if the drug abused is illegal they can give Methadone and then slowly taper the person off to prevent the severe withdrawals. There are other meds that help with wd’s too. The counseling and therapy is necessary for the psychological aspects of rehab but sudden withdrawal from a drug that the body has become dependent upon or addicted to can kill someone. Not only does the body shake, sweat, get vomiting, diarrhea, etc… The Blood pressure and Heart rate goes up high enough to cause heart attacks and strokes among other things. It is really harsh and hard to go thru and that is why most keep using and then some ppl have to keep taking meds for health reasons. (Also, I found it fascinating as how drugs work in your brain to cause the addiction-You should look into that sometime if you are really interested-or maybe get a really good counselor at a rehab center to explain it to you–It really is amazing)
It help with withdraw symptoms so the body does fell so bad. Detoxing of alcohol and heroin(opiatet) can kill the user if they just try and go cold turkey with out medical attention, not always but it can happen all drugs are bad but thoes 2 are really hard on the body. As for herion they are using suboxin/subutex now for the most part, taking methadone is a really long process but they still do it. I am 25 and suboxine works really well in my opinion, I dont know to much about methadone, but from the people I have talked to most didnt have anything positive to say about it. Talking with some you can trust always helps.
