Gambling Addiction Treatment, Compulsive Gambling

www.gamblinghelper.com A common amino acid dietary supplement may help fight pathological gambling addictions, a new study suggests. Pathological gambling (also called compulsive gambling) occurs when individuals are unable to control their gambling behaviors. These individuals thrive on the thrill and excitement of gambling, rather than the actual winnings. Individuals who are addicted to gambling will go to extreme lengths, which may include lying, stealing, cheating, or fraud, to perpetuate their addictions when money is scarce. Researchers from the Department of Psychiatry from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine explained that although pathological gambling is relatively common, pharmacotherapy research for the condition is limited. N-acetyl cysteine, an amino acid, seems to restore extracellular glutamate concentration in the nucleus accumbens, which is often associated with reward in the brain, and therefore offers promise in reducing addictive behavior. Twenty-seven subjects (12 women and 15 men) with DSM-IV pathological gambling were treated in an eight-week open-label trial with n-acetyl cysteine. The participants were randomly chosen to receive either n-acetyl cysteine or placebo for six weeks. The researchers found that 60 percent of the participants reported having less urges to gamble. Additionally, 13 out of the 16 participants who responded to the amino acid the first time around agreed to continue in the double-blind study for an additional six

Gambling sucks for the addicted personality type like me. I gambled for many years and did not realize how much it has stolen from me!!! I am an ex dealer and now and ex gambler… its not the money its the life you miss out on that gambling takes away from you.. Even after a big win a gambler will not spend the money on nice things for himself or family. Don’t take drugs to stop try GA or other 12 step programs… Meetings make it!!! Life is good without gambling.

N-Acetyl Cysteine or Nac for short should be available in your Local Health food store, failing that you could order it over the internet.
It is safe to take, just consult your health food store manager.
I know it has been stated that The amount used in studies has varied from 250 to 1,500 mg daily.

I just got NAC 600 from GNC , and took it for few hours ago. I now feel gain control after struggling with a big urge to go back to gambling every minute. The feeling to go back to gambling is down less and less. I do not feel an urge like now like into past 3 days. It is amazing.
If you have anything good to prevent me from gambling, please suggest it.

THank you so Much Dr. Fong.

I am currently publishing a second book, Switching Addictions, that describes the challenges the addict encounters as they work toward recovery. I also publish an online newsletter, Women Helping Women, which has been on-line for more than ten years and is read by women around the world.
