Does anyone know about The recovery place addiction treatment center in fort lauderdale florida?
My sister has been in recovery there for seven months for alcoholism. My family have been paying for it. My sister doesn’t seem better since going there. I feel they are keeping her there cause she is self pay . They have also put her on three different anti depressants and she seems very different. Since being there shew has very little contact with our family and her counselors do not talk to my parents about her recovery. They say she is an adult and they do not disclose information about her .They say some people take longer to recover. My family all live in Ohio and we feel very isolated from my sister. My family are very concerned for my sister and wonder if she should go to a different treatment center.
Thank you for any thoughts

Wow, this is really interesting. My mother was there for a month and we experienced the same frustrations. We all live in Massachusetts. My mom left abruptly the other day from the place and the details sound sketchy. Now she wants to go back… As I write this my dad is on the phone with them trying to get more info out of them. He has found people there to be very personable on the phone, etc. We had hired an interventionist a month ago and this facility was the one he recommended most that was within our budget. My mom is a VERY difficult client with a dual diagnosis and I do have to say that they really persevered with her in the beginning (upon arrival, she refused to sign in for over 24 hours!!). When she left at first the other day they were able to get her back, but then they threw in the towel and drove her to the airport (which I don’t necessarily blame).
Seven months is a very long time. They’ve never recommended a family meeting / therapy session, etc.? This REALLY concerns me…
therecoveryplace.net is their website. they seem to have a christian philosophy blended with 12 step recovery. check out the site, especially the apartments that long term residents get to stay in-i think i would want to stay there rather than ohio.
recovery is big business & many addicts need to be away from family, friends, and their old stomping grounds because all of these things can be triggers to use again. one thing that bothers me about their website is that they allude to separate phases of treatment but do not tell what they are.
another thing that bothers me is the fact that they rely on published christian works that i am not familiar with,
(Stephen Arterburn and New Life Ministries Transformation and The Life Recovery Bible).
while you have reason to be concerned, i would suggest leaving the issue of whether your sister is in the right place to your sister’s best judgement.
edit;
after a quick attempt at researching steven arterburns publications online-i found that he is the founder of the recovery place, has a nationally recognized radio ministry, and author of several christ based recovery books.
this smells cult-ish to me, but i have not done enough research to back up my naturally suspicious nature.
Good afternoon. We would like to address some of the concerns mentioned in this post as many of them are issues that are important to us at The Recovery Place. First of all, if family members have any issues or concerns about their loved ones who are in treatment with us, we hope that they would address their concerns with us directly.
It is our goal to make sure that there is engagement with the family throughout the entire treatment process. Additionally we believe that it is important to also provide the families with the necessary help. Often families play a role in the addition of a loved one and their recovery is dependent on their family. We try to achieve this by utilizing face-to-face family sessions, telephonic conferences if necessary, through weekly family programs, and offering programs to empower families and provide both professional support, as well as interaction with other families experiencing similar issues. For more information on our family programs, please visit: http://www.therecoveryplace.net/treatment-programs/family-program.aspx
Generally our programs range from 30 to 90 days. Some of the only cases that progress beyond 90 days involve a relapse of some kind during treatment or deep psychological trauma requiring additional care.
Being a medically based treatment facility, we have to abide by many HIPAA regulations. Our patients must provide us with authorization to release their medical information to anyone, including family members. This is one possible cause for a family not to receive any treatment updates about their loved ones.
The Recovery Place has no affiliation with Stephen Arterburn or New Life Ministries. As a correction we would also like to mention that Mr. Arterburn is not the founder of The Recovery Place. For more information our founder and CEO please visit: http://www.therecoveryplace.net/about/team/leadership-team.aspx
Google “Steve Arterburn” and you will find that there is nothing cultish about him or activities or organizations associated with him. He was previously associated with Minerth-Meier (psychologists) recovery programs which segued into New Life. His association with (not ownership of) The Recovery Place in Ft. Lauderdale should only lend respectability in terms of the Christian approach one could expect there. The “cultish” comment is puzzling.
The following has been copied/pasted from a website which popped up when I googled his name.
