Do you think drug addiction can be caused by rough childhood?

A lot of drug addicts say the reason they do what they do is because they have horrible memories from an abusive and rough childhood. In your opinion, can a rough childhood predispose somone to be a drug addict or is it just an excuse people use to justify what they do?

you could look at it both ways. yea druggies use allot of excuses but if their lives were really messed up e.g. molested or beatings, etc than i would be using drugs and alcohol too. if you were jest a spoiled rich kid and had nothing better to do with your self than do drugs,, then say its all societies fault or your parents, etc..

not everyone is the same.. we all react differently in difficult situations. The only way to truely understand this theory is by a number of case studies.

i personally think its an excuse but its also a way to forget about pain even if its the wrong way to do it

I dont think that it is an excuse at all. I suffered from drug abuse problems for years and the problem couldnt be solved until I realised the reasons why I was using drugs. Drug use is usually just a way of coping with emotions you dont know how to deal with , numbing the pain and avoiding the real problem, even just for a little while. In community work areas it is a well known fact that people who have suffered childhood abuse are alot more likely to resort to drugs or alcohol later in life to cope.
