BRC #128 (2) Treatment Centers

Who should we have working in treatment centers? If someone is seeking treament for an alcohol or drug problem will they be better served if the counselor is a former addict? Or, would the viewpoints and orientation, if you will, from a former addict be skewed?

I think that my experience in treatment was mixed when it came to the counselors / therapists who were in recovery.

In many cases, it helped when the counselors I was working with had similar experiences as I had. Although my therapists (not the same as a counselor) generally were not in recovery, and that didn’t seem to matter at all.

I think it helped many of the younger patients I was with in treatment to have counselors who were recovering addicts. Not sure why, but I think that it took away the “you don’t know what I’m going through” excuse during counseling sessions.
